"Father of the Internet" Vint Cerf argues that smart phones and other mobile technology will not make people less intelligent. "It reminds me of the guy that complained about the invention of writing," he explains. "He said people would no longer remember anything 'cause they could just write it down."

Vinton G. Cerf is vice president and chief Internet evangelist for Google. In this role, he is responsible for identifying new enabling technologies to support the development of advanced Internet-based products and services from Google. He is also an active public face for Google in the Internet world.

Widely known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet," Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet. In December 1997, President Clinton presented the U.S. National Medal of Technology to Cerf and his colleague, Robert E. Kahn, for founding and developing the Internet. Kahn and Cerf were named the recipients of the ACM Alan M. Turing award, sometimes called the "Nobel Prize of Computer Science," in 2004 for their work on the Internet protocols. In November 2005, President George Bush awarded Cerf and Kahn the Presidential Medal of Freedom for their work. The medal is the highest civilian award given by the United States to its citizens.

Comments on "Are Smart Phones Making Us Dumb? - Vint Cerf"

Our growing ...
Our growing dependence on an external source of artificial intelligence IS shrinking innate capacity for critical, analytical & intuitive thinking,? the effect of this cause is loss of individuality, independence & original thought, making us DEPENDENT on an externalized authority? to dispence collective intelligence. Empowered phones? = disempowered people, As we collectively connect without, we disconnect individually within. But at least we will all LOOK & FEEL smart, THATS the important part!

I now know a lot ...
I now know a lot more then I did years ago, thanks to the Internet. I learn things from Earth, countries, cities, food, people even military and government conspiracies. Smartphones aren't making us dumb. Its how you use it, being on Facebook 24/7 is making you dumb,? which is probably because it's secretly being watched by the CIA.. Heyhey conspiracy right there

Cerf is one of the ...
Cerf is one of the initial founders of the internet, as well as an insightful guy. Good interview.?

well you seem like ...
well you seem like someone worth saying hello to lol... cheers?

I think you are ...
I think you are right. And i share your need for solitude. So i know what you mean. I'm in no? means a particulary social person myself.

agreed.. I don't ...
agreed.. I don't avoid people, i just prefer being by myself at times.. Im not arrogant but i do believe a lot of? us are brainwashed (materialistic, selfish, etc etc) only care about money, fame etc etc..

Indeed. Maybe you ...
Indeed. Maybe you should consider the? fact that it's better to do that rather than advoiding socialization alltogether. There is more power in a group of well coordinated people than there are in loosely spread individuals. Besides, all norms aren't bad. I guess that varies from place to place though.

well if you can ...
well if you can separate yourself from the Expected? social norm of our society you are in good hands... :)

number two on that ...
number two on that list bothers me, as i've yet to meet a perfect person, we all need? to be questioned every once in a while to verify the quality of our ideas. Simply going out there and looking for verification isn't enough as we have a tendency to just see what we want to see.

We? are conditioned ...
We? are conditioned by our slave masters to think through a linear view from the moment we're born. It's up to the parents to be good mentors.

personally i ...
personally i believe to much socializing makes anyone dumb.... Yes i am an introvert, but 1 i have more time to focus on school 2 I have my own opinions and think for myself 3 i never have any drama and? rela b.s. to deal with and the list goes on..

Evangelist ?? is ...
Evangelist ?? is God in "Everything"? in America?

Fox news make you ...
Fox news make you dumb.?

Critical thinking ...
Critical thinking concept is quiet simpe: ask yourself what could deny the information? you have and why.

hahahhaah yes!? ...
hahahhaah yes!? Million Dollar Answer man

This? guy asking ...
This? guy asking the question got OWNED!

These revolutionary ...
These revolutionary technologies we are fortunate to have will not make? people smarter or less smart. It may make one who uses it wisely more learned. Now that encyclopedic knowledge is accessible quickly wherever we may be, we can, in a way not possible before the pc, become our own artists, musicians, graphic designers, accountants, filmmakers, etc.

I agree. peoplt who ...
I agree. peoplt who are curious and want to learn have a massive wealth of information then again those that don't i do think suffer from mental atrophy. all in all i do? belive we are more intelligent than the previous generations but that is simply because we have access to hind sight.

The problem is that ...
The problem is that knowledge itself has become "opinionized"? and teaching kids critical thinking skills has become a matter of teaching them how to defend your argument, no matter whether it may be "wrong." Hell, we now have people who want to teach our kids that evolution is a matter of opinion... I am just sayin'...

yeeeeeaaaaah ...
yeeeeeaaaaah someone benefits of the mass of stupid? peepz

For? the love of ...
For? the love of God I want to see people's brain activities monitored while they watch brain dead shows such as Big Brother for 8 hours straight! Please someone do a study.

It's been proven ...
It's been proven that strategy games make people more analytical, first person shooters improve greater hand to eye coordination, reflexes and improved cognition. Along with the massive amounts of information we can acquire at will on the internet I think technology in general is? making people smarter.

Will people stop ...
Will people stop memorizing info because it's easier to get it from the internet or a phone? I can remember phone numbers (BC) from before cellphones because I had to. Now, if my phone isn't handy, I can't? remember the numbers for people I've known more recently. Or maybe my neurons are dissolving.

Reinvent? critical ...
Reinvent? critical thinking!~

exactly!?
exactly!?

lol at the girl in ...
lol at the girl in the background .....after she hears its being video taped, she puts the phone down and sorta glances to her left? =D priceless!!!

Luinreg is right. ...
Luinreg is right. Just think about the airplane. Most of us have no clue how to solve the aerodynamic equations of flight. If we didn't have airplanes, think how much better we? would understand aerodynamics!

Another ...
Another confirmation from the amen corner here too, Sis. Pretty soon, all humans will have to do is exist, we will be having things doing everything for us. ? Like the old song says, we won't have to think, do or say.

Well we know the ...
Well we know the extreme that smart phones won't destroy society. However what having these inventions are damaging because that people won want to use such advanced mechanics of invention such as calculus won't have to understand the symbols or? theory of math because of the dependency of a calculator. When you lose all those who could teach that technical information to the next generation you create a bigger dependency.

The thing is, ...
The thing is, people used to get their information from only a few places. Local radio, local news television, and local newpapers. By being able to see every news source, local, national, and international, we can see that some contradict each other. I don't think? we should be judging the technology by the affects it has on stupid people. I think we should be judging people based on whether or not they can understand that not everyone with a microphone is infallible.
